What is a spreadsheet and why do i need one?

A spreadsheet helps you to make good business decisions when there is a lot of data, by:

  • Analysis of what has happened in the past.  For example, if you are buying a business, you would analyse the last 3 years financial results.
  • Analysis of data : There is information which is in a raw form (e.g. lots of sales data, or market data) which needs to be gathered into a useful format so that patterns can be seen e.g. profits or losses, averages, medians, trends, percentages
  • Using tried and trusted formats for projecting into the future what the likely profit will be.  This is done by using a set of assumptions based on past patterns, or industry statistics.

spreadsheets for business

We help to create useful spreadsheets such as:

  • Analysis of the last 3 to 5 years business profits
  • Analysis of data (you give us the data to analyse, or we source it for you)
  • Creating Forecasts for Financial Performance (projecting whether you are likely to make a profit, or loss, and how soon this will happen) based on a set of common sense assumptions

Spreadsheets for personal use

We do:

  • Personal Budgets
  • Plan a savings and investment strategy
  • Plan a strategy for investing in the real estate market

Other examples of spreadsheets

  • design of templates for comparing property attributes (e.g. per bedroom) to see which ones will be the most likely to be profitable for investment
  • savings opportunities – e.g. whether Solar power is suitable for you, finding the most suitable and affordable phone/tech plan (Australian providers)
  • advise and set up on accounting programs which are easy to use (Xero, etc ) which have automatic bank feeds

Frequently Asked Questions

What program do you use for designing your spreadsheets?

Microsoft Excel

How long does it take to design a spreadsheet?

It depends on how complex your spreadsheet will need to be.  We already have a set of templates for common needs (e.g. budgets, forecasts) which we use that are able to be quickly altered to suit your needs.  Starting out with a template saves set up time for you.

What experience and qualifications do you hold?

I have been using spreadsheets for 25 years, for both my personal use as well as business use.  For financial forecasting I completed the Advanced Financial Modelling Exam in 2021 (an exam held bi-annually by the Financial Modelling Institute).  I have worked within accountancy firms for almost 30 years.

Why shouldn't I just create and design the spreadsheet on my own?

It is a good idea to have your spreadsheet reviewed by someone else, because it is not unusual for spreadsheets to contain errors. The chance of having errors increases (a lot) if you do not have much experience designing or using spreadsheets.

A good, well designed spreadsheet uses a data input area which allows you to easily change the data inputs (i.e the assumptions) without needing to alter the output areas.
